Ian Poveda says Marcelo Bielsa told him to be direct and bring energy to Leeds United's play during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

The 20-year-old winger made an instant impact on the game after being called into action at the half-time interval amid the Elland Road clash.

Poveda stepped off the bench to replace Gjanni Alioski in LS11 with the hosts a goal down following Raheem Sterling's opener.

United, though, battled back to earn a credible point as record signing Rodrigo pounced on a mistake from City stopper Ederson to sweep home from a corner in the second half.

Poveda caused visiting full-back Benjamin Mendy immediate issues following his introduction at the break with his pace and driving runs.

The former City wide man forced Pep Guardiola to substitute the defender such was his joy, with Nathan Ake replacing the left-back in the 71st minute.

It was just Poveda's second taste of Premier League football this season, having made his Whites top flight debut against Sheffield United last weekend.

"The instruction was to get at my player [Mendy]," Poveda said post-match of his half-time instructions from Bielsa.

"It was to make runs in behind, bring energy onto the pitch and make movements all the time. Link up and be confident - that's what the gaffer told me.

"We put in a lot of hard work. We gave our all. It was a good shift from the lads. We have mixed feelings [about the result]. It was a good game, tough game. The boys were excellent.

"We gave our all on the pitch and we came away with a point."

Asked about facing his former side, he said: "To be fair I'm looking at every game the same. I'm hungry in each match. Maybe this game had a bit more edge to it."
