'I would have been kicking off' - Jermaine Beckford voices frustration on behalf of Leeds talent

Former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford has claimed that he would have been “kicking off” if he was in Patrick Bamford’s position on Friday night against West Ham.

The Elland Road hitman has been in inspired form for much of this season, and hit his ninth goal in 13 top flight outings against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.

The 27-year-old's headed effort from a rebounded Rodrigo shot got his side back on level terms against the Magpies, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men eventually kicking on to secure an eye-catching 5-2 win.

But it was a different story against West Ham over the weekend, with Bamford largely starved of service in a disappointing 2-1 defeat.

Reflecting on that match during his weekly Doing a Leeds Podcast, Beckford admitted that he would have struggled to keep his anger in check had he found himself in the striker’s position against the Hammers.

“My frustration stems from being a centre-forward and seeing myself in Patrick Bamford’s position, in his boots right now”, he said.

"He made a couple of great movements when we had the ball out wide in both wide areas. Instead of the ball getting flashed across the second six-yard box, which is the space between six-yard box and the penalty spot, it was cut back and passed across the edge of the 18-yard box and out the other side.

"We were trying to be too intricate.

"My frustration is that if I was in Patrick’s boots, I would have been kicking off when I got to half-time, saying, ‘Put the ball in the box’.

"Sometimes the simplest thing is the most effective. Just put it in the box. Patrick’s really strong in the air.

"Sometimes you’ve got to just throw it in and see what happens.

"Have faith and have confidence in your strikers that they’re going to, firstly, make the right movement to lose the defender, and secondly, have faith in yourself that you’re going to put it in with quality.”

Of his nine goals so far this term, Bamford has scored two with his head.

All but one of his strikes in the Premier League have come from inside the box. The exception was his stunning drive in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa.
