'I worry a little bit' - talkSPORT pundit makes Bielsa 'crossroads' claim after successive Leeds defeats

Andy Townsend has questioned whether Leeds United fans will be willing to show patience with Marcelo Bielsa’s high-octane style of play if it leads them into a relegation battle this season.

The Argentine has drawn widespread plaudits throughout his career for his uniquely relentless attacking approach, and has already seen his side put in a number of breathtaking displays since they returned to the Premier League at the beginning of the campaign.

But the Whites currently find themselves on a run of three losses in their last four matches, and conceded four goals in consecutive outings against Leicester City and Crystal Palace prior to the international break.

That mini-slump has left them 15th in the table – albeit seven points clear of the drop zone – and the 17 goals they have let in so far is the joint worst tally in the division.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Townsend was quick to clarify that he does not believe that Leeds are in any kind of relegation danger just yet, but also hinted that supporters could turn on Bielsa if his side continue to drop points as a result of his refusal to alter his principles.

"This is the tough point now”, the pundit said.

"They will come to a crossroads - at some point, as a group of players, when you're playing in a certain fashion and it's not happening - I'm not saying Leeds are anywhere near that yet, and they're not.

"Even though they've had a couple of dodgy results and they're conceding quite heavily as we speak, I don't think they're at that crossroads yet where they're going to start ripping up what they do.

"There might come a point, and that's the interesting part with Bielsa for me, is if they persist with getting sometimes six players ahead of the ball, looking to get in the box before the ball's even been delivered.

"If the ball gets turned over at that point, you've got six out the game, and I know they get back at an incredible rate of knots, we've seen examples of that on Match of the Day and Sky all season where people are very impressed with their physical capability. I am as well.

"I worry a little bit for them if they're just going to blindly continue with this 'we can win games 4-3 if we need to'.

"It's why [Pep] Guardiola and [Mauricio] Pochettino love him and I think any football fan out there would generally relish and welcome a Bielsa-type team playing Premier League football. We do.

"I just wonder how much the Leeds fans will honestly, hand on heart, say this is the right way to go if their Premier League status became in any way, shape or form, debatable over the way they play and approach.

"Would he change, could he change, should he change?"

Despite their recent dip in form, Leeds are still closer to a top-four spot than they are to the bottom three, with Bielsa’s men trailing fourth-placed Southampton by six points.
