Mark Jackson saluted winger Crysencio Summerville for his starring role in a "team effort" as Leeds United's Under-23s overcame Burnley on Monday.

The Whites development boss saw his side run out 4-1 winners over the Clarets, opening up a six-point gap at the top of the Premier League 2 second division in the process.

Summerville - who arrived from Feyenoord's youth ranks in September following a loan spell with ADO Den Haag - bagged an impressive hat-trick in Lancashire on just his third Under-23s appearance.

Forward Sam Greenwood opened the scoring 24 hours on from his first team debut but it was the winger who grabbed the headlines and plaudits post-match.

The 19-year-old bagged twice in six minutes before the half-time interval and completed the scoring to seal the match ball in the final minute of normal time.

Jackson - who is in his first season in charge of the development squad - revealed his delight at the wide man's showing and the start from his side to 2021.

"Collectively we attack as a team, we defend as a team," Jackson reflected afterwards.

"It's nice for those players to get on the scoresheet today, particularly Crysencio. It was only his second start for the Under-23s and he's had to bide his time.

"He's been working hard this week in training, as the rest of the lads have. It was a great team effort today. It was just what we needed for our first game back [after the Christmas break]."

Asked about the victory and performance at Leyland County Ground, he said: "It's always nice to get a win. It was difficult conditions and I think two contrasting halves.

"I thought we played some good stuff in the first half, created a lot of chances and utilised our game plan against the opposition.

"We probably should've gone into the break more goals up and been more ruthless in front of goal.

"But we knew what Burnley were going to be like in the second half and we knew what conditions were like.

"It was windy and the pitch wasn't conducive to how we wanted to play, but that is part and parcel of players development.

"They have to deal with those situations. I said at half-time we had been in a similar situation at Newcastle earlier in the season, so let's not fall into that trap.

"I thought the boys stood up well to it. Burnley came out at us and gave us a challenging second half.

"It's about the lads managing different and difficult periods in the games. That's football. We still tried to play our game which was pleasing."
