The 30-year-old midfielder put pen to paper on a deserved one-year extension at Elland Road on Friday with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

Leeds hold an option to trigger a further 12 month stay beyond that but it has been a long battle back for the former Middlesbrough man.

Forshaw's recent resurgence from a complex hip injury has defied odds and expectations among Whites supporters.

He missed nearly two years of match action which saw him absent from the Championship promotion-winning season and the club's debut campaign of Premier League football for 16 years.

Forshaw, though, has more than proved his worth in recent months in the top flight upon his return - making 14 appearances in total this term.

The central midfielder is playing consistently in the heart of Marcelo Bielsa's team once again and is producing running stats that cause eyes to water.

"It's to just keep playing games in the Premier League," Forshaw said of his goal now he is back and up to speed.

"It's to keep helping the team as much as I can, keep progressing as a club and enjoy it. Unfortunately I missed two years so I do want to enjoy it as much as I can.

"I'm proud. I worked hard to get to this point so there's no stopping here. I'm really pleased to sign my contract and kick on again.

"I've said previously that there were times I was really worried. But I just kept going and chipping away every day with the physio staff.

"Once I knew my body was fine I felt the football side of it would be okay."

Asked about the team's recent struggles with Leeds sitting 16th in the top flight, he added: "Without making excuses we have had a lot of injuries. It'll be great to get a lot of the lads back to hit a good run of form.

"We probably haven't had a real run of wins yet this season so we'll be looking forward to that."
