Former Leeds United defender Marius Zaliukas dies age 36

Former Leeds United defender Marius Zaliukas has died at the age of 36, the Lithuanian Football Federation has confirmed.

The defender made 15 appearances for the Elland Road club, having joined the Whites in October 2013 before his release the following summer.

Zaliukas was most known for his spell with Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts, where he made over 150 appearances and captained the Edinburgh side to Scottish Cup success in 2012.

He also spent time with Rangers north of the border before his return to Lithuania in 2016.

Zaliukas was capped 25 times for his country.

A statement from the Lithuanian Football Federation read: “Marius Zaliukas, a long-term national team defender and legendary Lithuanian football defender, has gone to eternal rest.

"On behalf of the Lithuanian football community, we send our condolences to Mary.

"Marius inspired a lot of young football players throughout his career, and his contribution to Lithuanian football will never be forgotten.”
