Middlesbrough released a statement on Tuesday morning.

Ex-Leeds United defender Jonathan Woodgate has been sacked by Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

The former Whites centre-back has been immediately replaced at the Riverside by head coach Neil Warnock, who will take charge of the Teessiders for the final eight games of the campaign as they battle to beat the drop to League One.

Boro were handed a damaging 3-0 home defeat by Swansea City last weekend as the season resumed behind closed doors following a three month hiatus amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Middlesbrough remain outside the relegation zone on goal difference in 21st place.

A club statement read: "MFC can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

"Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.

"Warnock will assume responsibility immediately.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach."

Warnock - who spent the 2012-13 season in charge at Elland Road - is now preparing his side for two crucial games against Stoke and Hull City in the coming days.
