Ex-Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa records huge Copa America victory while political instability rages

Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay scored five times without reply en route to a resounding win over Bolivia at Copa America with the ex-Leeds United boss next set to face the United States.

An Elland Road showdown of sorts awaits as Leeds figures from seasons past go head-to-head in the final group fixture of Copa America's Group C.

Bielsa's 'Celeste' are now on the cusp of booking a quarter-final place having earlier beaten Panama in the group stage.

Goals from Facundo Pellistri, Darwin Nunez, Maximiliano Araujo, Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur delivered all three points in convincing style as South American minnows Bolivia were brushed aside.

While Uruguay are considered among the tournament favourites, their opponents played against the backdrop of a political crisis back home as an attempted coup took place in the capital city La Paz.

As for Uruguay's next opponent, Brenden Aaronson, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and the US Men's National Team, their route out of the group is somewhat less straightforward.

"The U.S. men’s national team is in trouble," a report in The Athletic read following Uruguay's comfortable victory.

"After a shocking loss to Panama in the second round, the host nation’s path out of the group stage is now murky at best."

Aaronson was unused as Gregg Berhalter's side were downed 2-1 by the Panamanians, managed by ex-Leeds coach Thomas Christiansen.

Consequently, the US must ensure of a result against a formidable Uruguay and hope Bolivia can avoid defeat versus Panama in order to progress to the knockout stage, or face the ignominy of an early exit at a tournament which is being hosted in the United States.
