Everton 0 Leeds United 1: Raphinha opens Whites account for historic victory at Goodison Park

Despite creating a whole host of chances, Leeds looked to be heading for another goalless draw with Jack Harrison coming closest to scoring when heading against the post as part of a game in which three goals were disallowed for offside.

Yet with 11 minutes left, summer recruit Raphinha produced a brilliant low drive from 25 yards out to finally beat Everton's England no 1 Jordan Pickford as Leeds sealed their first league win at Goodison Park since the 3-2 triumph of August 1990.

The Whites now sit 11th with 14 points from ten games played.

Leeds threatened in the very first minute as Patrick Bamford's touch released Raphinha who poked the ball past an onrushing Jordan Pickford but with not a strong enough contact allowing Everton to clear.

Bamford then twisted and turned on the edge of the area before firing just wide though the striker was offside.

But only a superb save from Illan Meslier denied Everton in the seventh minute as Abdoulaye Doucoure looked destined to score when connecting to a Tom Davies cross from close range.

Yet United then squandered a glorious chance four minutes later when Raphinha set up Jack Harrison who could only slide the ball wide from inside the box.

After shots from Everton's Richarlison and United's Kalvin Phillips were easily saved, Leeds then wasted another fine opening as Pickford denied Bamford with his legs after the striker latched on to a miskicked Mateusz Klich shot near the penalty spot.

James Rodriguez then looked to have fired Everton into a 24th minute lead from a tight angle but the Colombian was flagged offside.

Michael Keane then sent a header over the bar but Leeds were dominating and Everton somehow survived twice in the 29th minute as Pickford brilliantly tipped away Raphinha's header with Jack Harrison's fierce attempt on the rebound cleared off the line.

But another fine chance then presented itself to Everton with Mason Holgate connecting to a free-kick with a volley from inside the box that Meslier proved equal to and Meslier then pushed away a low drive from Richarlison from outside the box.

From the following corner, Everton then had the ball in the net for a second time through Richarlison but the effort was disallowed for offside.

Another decent Richarlison effort was then saved by Meslier but back came Leeds with Harrison heading against the post and Bamford firing the rebound wide.

A half full of chances with 20 attempts at goal and 13 of those for Leeds then ended with Klich curling a fine effort just wide from the edge of the box.

The first chance of the second half came just two minutes after the restart with Dominic Calvert-Lewin racing away down the right and forcing a save from Meslier from a tight angle.

Calvert-Lewin then got away down the left but pulled his shot across goal and wide.

From a lovely move, Klich then blazed a shot over from the edge of the box.

From Klich's clever pass, Bamford's attempted lob of Pickford was then sent over.

But Meslier was then very lucky after passing the ball straight to Rodriguez who also failed to lob the keeper from the edge of the box as Meslier saved.

Richarlison's weak shot was then easily gathered by Meslier before Pickford kept out Harrison's attempt from the edge of the box.

At the other end, Allan's effort from the right was deflected just wide before Raphinha also poked an effort wide after sublime skill inside the box.

Bamford then had the ball in the net from close range but Gjanni Alioski who had supplied the cross was just offside.

Meslier then spilled Rodriguez's shot but gathered at the second attempt and Allan then fired wide for the Toffees but Richarlison then sliced a fine chance wide from inside the box.

United looked to be heading for another goalless draw but Raphinha had other ideas and the Brazilian gathered the ball before producing a fine low finish from the edge of the box to finally beat Pickford in the 79th minute.

Alioski then fired wide in the 88th minute but was well offside and Pickford somehow denied substitute Helder Costa from close range in added time but in the end Raphinha's fantastic strike proved enough.

Leeds United: Meslier, Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Dallas, Phillips, Klich, Raphinha (Poveda 84), Alioski, Harrison (Costa 89), Bamford (Rodrigo 90). Subs not used: Casilla, Struijk, Davis, Roberts, Poveda.
