The 20-year-old broke onto the scene with boyhood club last season, scoring the winner against Manchester United on debut in October and in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

Longstaff, however, grew frustrated with his lack of playing time on Tyneside with just nine appearances in the Premier League last term and looked set to leave at the end of his contract this summer.

But, after months of persuasion from Magpies boss Steve Bruce, Longstaff has decided to remain at St James’ Park and in the process, turn down interest from Leeds, Brighton and Udinese, Sky Sports report.

Had Longstaff moved on from Newcastle, the North East club would have been due £400,000 in compensation after he rose through their academy ranks.
