The Saints made a bright start in Tuesday evening's Premier League clash but squandered chances and then saw a penalty decision overturned before a goal from a free-kick was disallowed.

Southampton were awarded a spot kick after Nathan Tella skipped past Diego Llorente and went to ground but VAR instructed referee Andre Marriner to check the incident on his monitor and the decision was overturned.

The visitors then had the ball in the net as Adams netted from a quickly-taken James Ward-Prowse free-kick but Marriner insisted the set piece had been taken before he had blown his whistle.

Leeds also had chances but the first half somehow ended goalless and United then upped the ante after the break by netting three unanswered strikes through Patrick Bamford, Stuart Dallas and Raphinha.

Speaking to Southampton's official website, Adams admitted both the defeat and the disallowing of his goal were bitter pills to swallow.

"Obviously it's a tough result to take," said Adams, who Leeds looked to purchase back in January 2020.

"I think we dominated the first-half but had some decisions go against us.

"In the second half we didn't really create much and we got punished."

Reflecting on his disallowed goal, Adams said: "The ref disallowed because he said he wasn't ready, it's one of those, it's hard to take.

"We believed in everything that we were doing. We were doing the right things but couldn't get the goal in the end and they punished us in the second half.

"It was down to us to keep moving the ball well and try and create openings, we didn't do that unfortunately.

"As a striker you're going to go through these spells, I've been through it once before.

"I think everyone knows that we're a good team and we have to remember that and keep going. It doesn't get any easier, but as a team we're more than capable of doing it."
