Adrian Durham has launched an impassioned defence of Leeds United’s style of play, arguing that anybody urging them to change their approach doesn’t properly understand football.

The Whites have garnered a reputation as one of the most entertaining sides in the Premier League this season thanks to Marcelo Bielsa’s insistence on playing a high-energy, attacking system.

Already this term, the result has been a number of eye-catching and varied scorelines, with recent heavy defeats against the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur tempered by equally high-scoring wins over sides like Newcastle United and West Brom.

Despite taking 23 points from their opening 17 matches and sitting 12th in the table, however, there have been calls from some quarters for Bielsa to alter his tactical approach in favour of a more conservative style with a greater emphasis on defensive solidity.

But Durham has openly hit out at any such suggestions, claiming that he fails to see an issue with the manner in which Leeds go about their business.

Reflecting on Saturday’s 3-0 loss against Spurs on talkSPORT, the outspoken host said: “He [Bielsa] knows that Tottenham have got better players than Leeds.

"When you’ve got three centre-backs out injured and you’re Leeds and you’re a newly-promoted side, how do you think you’re going to get on against Kane and Son? What’s the likelihood? Did anybody really predict that Leeds were going to go to Spurs and win the game?

"Even if they’d shut up shop – with three centre-backs out injured, how are they meant to shut up shop? Do people not understand football? It’s just unbelievable.

"Leeds’ priority at the start of the season after coming up, what is it? It’s survival.

"Bearing in mind, short preseason as well, so it’s a very different season. The newly-promoted clubs were always going to struggle. Look at the other two. Look at the other two and how much they’re struggling.

"Leeds United are on 23 points – 12 points, four wins, above the relegation zone, and people are saying they need to change? Do you understand anything about football?

"Leeds’ priority was survival, Bielsa’s priority was style – they’ve got both. What’s the problem? I don’t get it, what’s the problem? Nobody’s explained it to me.

"Why have they got to change?”
