Journalist Grant Wahl and Whites boss Marsch both attended Princeton University and Wahl has dedicated many column inches to writing about United's head coach. Wahl had been out in Qatar covering the World Cup but the 48-year-old died suddenly on Friday whilst covering the quarter-final between Argentina and the Netherlands. Wahl collapsed inside the Lusail Iconic Stadium and received medical treatment but passed away shortly afterwards. Wahl revealed on Thursday that he had been suffering with what he thought was bronchitis. The journalist had had twice visited the medical clinic within the media centre.

Marsch was quick to pay tribute on Saturday morning and offered his condolences to Wahl’s wife Dr Celine Gounder and all those associated with the American journalist. Marsch wrote: "I am absolutely devastated at the news of Grant Wahl's passing. He was an incredible person and friend. As a journalist, he was all about integrity and fairness. For me, soccer in America would not be where it is today without the investment that Grant made in reporting, educating, and telling the vital stories of our sport. As a friend, I will dearly miss having an ally and friendly smiling face in the press box on match day. We had a very special relationship and always supported each other entirely. Lastly, my deepest sympathies to Celine and their family. Thank you brother. I will cherish you forever. Rest In Peace."

United’s USA American international star Tyler Adams also paid tribute, writing: “On behalf of myself and the US Men’s National Team we offer our deepest sympathy to Celine Gounder and all those who mourn the loss of Grant Wahl. As players we have a tremendous amount of respect for the work of journalists, and Grant's was a giant voice in soccer that has tragically fallen silent.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: "It is with disbelief and immense sadness that I have been made aware of the passing of renowned sports journalist Grant Wahl, whilst reporting on a quarter-final match during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

"Only some days ago, Grant was recognised by FIFA and AIPS for his contribution to reporting on eight consecutive FIFA World Cups, and his career also included attendance at several FIFA Women's World Cups, as well as a host of other international sporting events. His love for football was immense and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the global game."
