Smith's side have dropped a point and a place below tenth-placed Leeds albeit with a game in hand, after the Whites and Villa experienced contrasting fortunes at the weekend.

Villa led 1-0 at Liverpool before falling to a 2-1 defeat but Leeds recorded a 2-1 victory at champions-elect City despite playing over half of the game with ten men following captain's Liam Cooper's sending off.

City will now provide Villa's next opponents in next Wednesday's clash at Villa Park and Smith used the example of United's triumph at the Etihad to highlight what can be done.

"Leeds have gone there and beat them 2-1 with only two shots on goal so it can be done," Smith told VillaTV.

"It just shows you the crazy world of football.

"We have got a great belief in the team."
