'Brilliant' Leeds United dressing room reaction shortlived amid post-Liverpool mindset switch

Leeds United pulled off the unexpected at Liverpool but Bournemouth at home cannot have an ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ feel to it – Whites title winner Tony Dorigo writes exclusively for the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Even at my most positive the idea of Leeds United beating Liverpool at Anfield felt far-fetched.

What I did hope was that we would produce a performance that we could take into the next game, and whatever that may get us, but to actually achieve all three points was so unexpected.

To do that we would have to play at our best, avoid mistakes and put together a fantastic game and somehow that's exactly what we did.

We've known all along that the boys are very much together and that they're a good bunch, even facing so much adversity and making mistakes when they have not been at their best. They apply themselves in the right manner and it's clear that they have a real belief in what they do, and that is really important.

I think they went to Liverpool feeling that things haven't gone their way of late, that they haven't got what they deserved, and I would agree with them. But at the same time, the Premier League is so harsh in that anything below par will get you punished and we've been punished quite a bit for exactly that. So going in there and showing that resilience I think was remarkable.

The early goal helped because it put jitters in the crowd and helped generate a strange atmosphere at times, but the way we stuck at it, the way we attacked - because you can't go to Liverpool and sit there to defend for 90 minutes - and the balance we struck in defence and midfield was impressive. The tempo in the first half was just so high that you couldn't keep doing that throughout and so balance was vital.

Having Tyler Adams back in that midfield area was key. He's got characteristics that we really need and as a leader who can set the tempo, showed he was there for the win. He wasn't overawed and that attitude then spread through everyone else. You also have to look at the role played by Illam Meslier, who was wonderful and made some hugely important saves in the second half to stand up and be counted.

After the game I was down around the tunnel and the atmosphere was delight but tinged with relief. I think the coaching staff probably had to peel a few off the ceiling, and rightly so. It was brilliant to see them bouncing around the place as they left the field.

It's really difficult to go about your work in the right manner when so much is going on around you. The pressure is just intense and there's no doubt that it was building and building and you look back at Leicester and Fulham, two games that were huge, that we lost. Those defeats put us in a place we don't want to be, and the pressure was really telling, so I think after the full-time joy came the relief, and then a switching on to what comes next.

It was a heck of a result, but it cannot be a one-off and that will be swirling around in Jesse Marsch's mind. Now there's got to be a determination for the boys to avoid the kind of thing we've had previously following a game against a 'big six' club. We can't go and play Chelsea off the park and lose against Brighton, we can't produce an amazing 45 minutes against Arsenal and then lose two on the bounce. We've done it again here at Anfield, but this time let's back it up against Bournemouth.

Marsch's team have shown us what they can do on a small number of occasions and given plenty of us belief that they're not a bad side at all, but they've got to do it on a consistent basis, it has to be more than two or three times, and that will be a huge focus for them now. It was probably in their heads when the celebrations began to die down at Anfield.

You won't find a bigger game than Liverpool away, but Bournemouth at home is at the same level. It's a massive game for us. Having Luis Sinisterra back will help, as one of our main men in attack who always looks like he can produce something, although I have to say I'm delighted for Crysencio Summerville who did well in cameos last season and from everything you hear, is just incredible in training. Translating that at senior level in the Premier League is always the challenge for a young player but what he did at Liverpool shows the confidence he's got. Marsch obviously likes him, he's giving him chances and we're watching him grow and at Anfield he was sharp, dangerous, and tracked back well. Doing that side of the game does get noticed, even for such an attacking player.

The goal and the 21st birthday the very next day made it one hell of a couple of days for him and just as the team are now thinking about what comes next, so must Summerville. He's got two in two and that's fantastic, but what can he do against Bournemouth to continue that progression and to prove he deserves more than appearances off the bench when the senior wingers are fit.
