Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny tests positive for coronavirus ahead of Leeds United clash

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash with Leeds United.

The 28-year-old has been on international duty with Egypt in recent days and featured against Togo on Saturday in a 1-0 victory.

Fellow international and Liverpool forward Mo Salah contracted COVID-19 last week whilst away with his country and Elneny has now also returned a positive result for the virus.

The Gunners star will enter a period of self-isolation and is set to miss Sunday's top flight showdown with the Whites in LS11 in line with government protocols.

United host Mikel Arteta's outfit at Elland Road with kick-off set for 16:30 in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Elneny has featured five times for Arsenal in league action this term and has struck up a solid partnership with headline summer signing Thomas Partey in the centre of midfield.

Partey himself is battling to be fit after being forced off against Aston Villa last time out with a thigh complaint.

The 27-year-old, though, is reportedly confident of recovering in time to feature against Marcelo Bielsa's men.

Elneny is showing no symptoms and is now back in Cairo isolating after his agent confirmed the news before the Egyptian FA clarified the situation.

"The results of the medical swabs conducted by the national team upon arrival in Togo showed negative all except for Arsenal player Mohamed Elneny, whose result appeared positive without any symptoms," the EFA said.

"The player immediately began to implement the special medical protocol for people infected with Covid-19."
