Allan Clarke fan memories - "He was ahead of his time... the reason for Leeds United's FA Cup win at Wembley"

Allan Clarke was the final piece in Don Revie's Leeds United puzzle.

Despite the Whites having already claiming a League title and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup trophy under Revie, they still lacked a mean streak and cutting edge in front of goal.

Enter Clarke.

151 goals in 366 appearances made him a household name in LS11 following his arrival from Leicester City in 1969.

Clarke went on to spend the next nine years of his career on the books at Elland Road, helping Leeds to become one of the most dominant forces in English football.

Team honours followed with the capture of a Charity Shield, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, First Division title and an FA Cup and Clarke was also named in the 1973-74 PFA Team of the Year during his spell in West Yorkshire.

The latter of the team trophies will be associated with Clarke forever, as he bagged the winner against Arsenal in 1972 to bring home United's first and only triumph in England's oldest and most famous cup competition.

He was also a member of the Revie team who reached the 1975 European Cup final, but United were controversially beaten by Bayern Munich in Paris - a match in which supports still sing about to this very day.

We asked United fans from across the world for their memories of one of the club's greatest every strikers, and here's what they said:

Tommy McGuinness - The hat-trick vs Norwich at Villa Park stays in my mind, but the way he was ahead of his time by playing on the shoulder of the opponents often being caught offside but when he wasn't a goal followed. Sniffer a true goalscorer. Marching on Together!

David Gelder - Allan Clarke was always my favourite player and scoring the winner in 1972 just made it even more special.

George Carter - Yes, you have guessed it! I was there. An amazing day out at Wembley in 1972 and at last we finally got what we deserved.

Patrick Lynskey - He was known as a "ghost" striker because he used to go by defenders without them knowing, however he also scored some absolute screamers from the edge of the box. Quality centre forward.

Russell Chandler - A truly great striker.

Geoff Jefferson - Awesome player him and Mick Jones.

Debra Julie Coker - He was the reason I supported Leeds in the first place, my Dad was a Spurs fan and I used to go with him to the matches, they played Leeds and saw Clarke and that was it, Dad was not amused, and I have been Leeds ever since I was eight, I'm 60 now!

Rebecca Brown - I used to have posters of him all over my bedroom wall!

Tom Humphreys - My favourite Leeds striker. I'll never forget sitting up until midnight here in Australia waiting for the cup final to start and seeing him score the winner. What a night.

Eddie Roy Malthouse - Proud to have seen this absolute legend many times. I was one of 52,000 who saw that winner against Barcelona in Euro Cup semi-finals at Elland Road. And that FA Cup.... I was watching and celebrated for weeks!
