7. Doncaster Rovers 4-2 Leeds United, August 2015
It was a night of mixed emotions for Lewis Cook, who bagged his first senior goal before being shown a straight red for a two-footed challenge on Aaron Taylor-Sinclair. The Thorp Arch product watched from the stands as Sam Byram and Chris Wood both skied their penalties to send Leeds out of the League Cup at the first round stage for the first time in club history.

After a dramatic two-legged contest ended 4-4 on aggregate, Shane Lowry and Bradley Johnson saw their spot-kicks saved as Carlisle United sealed a place in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.
Wigan twice took the lead in the FA Cup third round replay but David Healy found a reply both times. With the tie sent to a shootout, though, Healy’s spot-kick was the wrong side of the crossbar, which was then rattled by Rob Hulse to confirm United’s exit.
Paul Robinson was the hero at Elland Road, heading Leeds into extra time in the dying moments before stopping Stefani Miglioranzi’s penalty in the shoot-out. The Yorkshire ‘keeper sent Leeds into the third round of the League Cup and brought a moment of joy amid what turned out to be a dismal season.
11. Leicester City 4-2 Leeds United, December 1999
Ninety minutes wasn’t enough for either side to find a winner - and it remained goalless in extra time as United fought Leicester for a place in the League Cup quarter-finals. Gary Kelly and Lee Bowyer both hit the bar to allow the Foxes to qualify.
Marítimo cancelled the Whites’ first leg advantage at Estadio dos Barreiros but couldn’t deliver in the shootout. Two of the Portuguese side’s players missed, with Lee Sharpe delivering the decisive spot-kick to put United into the second round of the UEFA Cup.
