No one expected United to follow up their 1992 Championship title win with a 17th-placed finish - so when, after an unbeaten home record was all the Elland Road faithful had to cling to the previous season, United lost 4-0 to Norwich City in LS11 in the third game of the season to trigger a run of three consecutive defeats, it looked as though they might well be on track for another disastrous Premiership campaign.
What followed, though, was a 14-game unbeaten run which lasted from August until December and made United major contenders in the top half of the table once more.
Leeds ended their fourth campaign in fifth place, narrowly missing out to a Cup Winners Cup qualification spot to to holders Arsenal, who bettered their final day tally by just one point.
