Patrick Bamford’s early penalty separated the two sides as a makeshift Whites defence held out for the clean sheet.

Cruicially, Marcelo Bielsa’s men extended their advantage over the relegation places to nine points ahead of their trip to West Brom on Tuesday.

Here is how some fans reacted on social media:

@lukechunknaylor: That was horrible to watch

@ellis_platten: BIG. BIG. 3 points that. Not pretty but all that matters is the result.

@Courtney9Davies: Top 4 back on!

@frazer1997: Defensively outstanding.. Sometimes you've gotta win the ugly way.. Never the less 3 points and clean sheet.

@JackSnowden18: 1-0 to the referee. But we will take those all day long. Thanks for coming @BurnleyOfficial

@BenPlacito: That was the longest second half of my life sometimes you’ve gotta win dirty. Buzzing with that.

@jthompsonmills: Can’t get much uglier than that. Outplayed but not out scored. Clean sheet. Makeshift defence. People want us to play more pragmatically. We did. #MOT #ALAW

@MGB8man:That's a great result. Feel for Burnley, but we've had our fair share of bad luck this season. As they say, it all evens out. #LUFC

@stevehamlin19: Anxious viewing, but massive victory.

@HxrryLUFC: What a stressful second half. Up to 11th, Bamford with his 10th goal of the season. Happy Sunday.

@RadioBurley: Big win. Hard to watch second-half, but a massive three points. Phillips and Ayling were immense. #LUFC #MOT

@NinaNorlund: Phew! Watching this match was not good for my heart but we got those three points & that's what matters!
