Leeds United 0 Wigan Athletic 2 – December 26, 2014

Leeds were pushed further towards the bottom of the Championship after a frustrating 2-0 home loss to relegation-threatened Wigan.

The Latics took an early lead against the run of play when Liam Cooper sent a James McClean cross into his own net.

Leeds then desperately bombarded the Wigan goal throughout the rest of the match, with Sam Byram agonisingly missing the target from a yard out.

But McClean once again sank Leeds with a goal on 83 minutes, ending the Whites’ Boxing Day cheer and leaving the fans dreading the prospect of a possible relegation battle.

Leeds United 2 Wigan Athletic 0 – December 4, 2013

Ross McCormack helped Leeds gain their first ever league victory over Wigan, scoring both goals in a 2-0 home win over the Latics, which put his goal tally to eight in six games.

The two sides were experiencing contrasting fortunes, with Wigan being without a manager and on a losing streak of four games, while Leeds secured a fifth successive home win, leaving them only two points off the play-off places.

Luck would soon turn for both teams however, as a poor run of form saw Leeds finish the season in 15th, while Wigan could look forward to two games against QPR in the play-offs.

Leeds United 3 Wigan Athletic 3 AET, Wigan win 4-2 on penalties – January 17 2006, FA Cup third round

After a 1-1 draw at the JJB stadium, fans witnessed a thrilling FA Cup replay at Elland Road, with the game taken to extra-time and a penalty shootout, which Leeds lost 4-2 to Wigan.

The Whites had to come from behind three times in the match, as David Healy grabbed their first equaliser late in the first half.

But the Northern Ireland international had to come to Leeds’ aid once again, converting a spot-kick mid-way through the second half to cancel out Jason Roberts’ early strike.

This sent the match into extra-time, which saw Wigan once again lead once again through Roberts, only for Leeds legend Gary Kelly to send a thunderous strike into the Wigan net to take the tie to penalties.

Healy could not produce for Leeds this time, however, as he and Rob Hulse both missed their spot-kicks, allowing Wigan to win the shootout 4-2 and hand Leeds an early exit from the FA Cup.

Leeds United 0 Wigan Athletic 2 – October 31, 2004

Leeds’ stuttering start to life in the Championship continued, as they sank to a 2-0 home loss against league-leaders Wigan Athletic.

Alan Mahon broke the Leeds United resistance early in the second half, after Jason Roberts’ pass allowed him to bury a shot in the top corner of the Leeds goal.

Roberts was then once again involved, finding Jimmy Bullard in acres of space in front of goal to seal the win for the Latics.

An improved second half of the season meant Leeds safely avoided a second successive relegation, while Wigan would go on to reach the top division of English football for the first time in their history.
