Leeds United v Huddersfield Town: Five memorable Elland Road battles

Town have the edge in terms of league wins between the two sides - 26 victories as opposed to 22 for Leeds with 17 draws - but David Wagner’s side head to Elland Road on the back of two comprehensive defeats at the hands of the Whites.

Ahead of derby day, here’s a nice little appetizer with five memorable recent Elland Road meetings between the pair, albeit for different reasons.

Dominant Leeds piled on the derby pain for struggling Huddersfield in a powerhouse home performance.

In what is expected to be Neil Redfearn’s final game in charge as caretaker head coach, with Sturm Graz manager Darko Milanic set to be appointed as the permanent head coach shortly after leaving the Austrian outfit, United produced an accomplished showing to continue their rise towards the business positions in the Championship.

Goals in the first half from Rudy Austin - a long-ranger which deceived Alex Smithies - and Mirco Antenucci, following a fine team move, were supplemented by a third strike on 69 minutes by Souleymane Doukara.

The front man netted his fourth goal of the season in front of a big Elland Road crowd of 29,131 - with the only downside for the hosts being the sending off for Gaetano Berardi for two bookable offences.

Captain Ross McCormack hit a hat-trick as rudderless Leeds thrashed Huddersfield 5-1 - on a never-to-be-forgotten afternoon.

Leeds’ players made a mockery of their club’s off-the-field meltdown, having looked ripe for the taking after the farcical off-the-field issues over the previous 24 hours.

Confusion around Brian McDermott’s position at the club was clarified at the end of Saturday’s game when the club said he had not been sacked and remained in charge.

That was despite McDermott receiving a phone call on a madcap Friday night informing him that he had been dismissed.

And it did not take long for it to get even worse for the beleaguered Leeds fans when Danny Ward gave Huddersfield a deserved lead.

But it was all United - with assistant-boss Nigel Gibbs in the dug-out - after that with McCormack scoring twice from close range and also converting Cameron Stewart’s cross to complete his treble.

Jimmy Kebe also finished from McCormack’s pass and Alex Mowatt chipped in a fifth goal.

James Vaughan grabbed a valuable late winner for Huddersfield to boost their survival bid and inflict a blow on former boss Neil Warnock’s outside hopes of gatecrashing the play-offs.

Neil Danns put Huddersfield into a second-half lead when he volleyed home Vaughan’s flick-on.

Aidy White equalised only two minutes after coming off the bench with a header before Rudy Austin’s volley then hit the bar.

But Vaughan slotted home the winner after Leeds lad Jack Hunt’s fine ball.

Michael Collins scored an injury-time winner to give Huddersfield a dramatic victory at Elland Road.

Poor defending from Town after only four minutes allowed Robert Snodgrass to poke home Luciano Becchio’s cross - but the visitors levelled just after the break when Casper Ankergren failed to deal with Keigan Parker’s cross and Joe Skarz finished from close range to equalise.

Deep into injury time, Collins won it for Town, turning home Danny Cadamarteri’s cross.

A bumper crowd of 32,501 - the highest at the third tier since 1979 - saw clinical Leeds thrash Town in a dominant second-half showing, with Jermaine Beckford netting a brace to bolster United’s promotion charge.

Leeds led at the interval through Jonathan Douglas’s long-ranger before Beckford slid in for his first on 49 minutes before firing home a rebound with 21 minutes to go.

Substitute Tore Andre Flo completed the scoring with a tap-in.
