Leeds United - the week that was: Rio Ferdinand signs, Whites crash out to Histon and Tomas Brolin makes debut

Leeds United puts pen to paper on his 18million move from West Ham to Elland Road in 2000.

Whites break British transfer record for Rio Ferdinand - November 24, 2000

Chairman Peter Ridsdale continued in his attempts to put Leeds on the map and help the club break into the higher echelons of English football by forking out Â£18million for West Ham academy product Rio Ferdinand.

The central defender went on to make 73 appearances for the club scoring three goals and was an integral member of the Whites team that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in which he scored a header against La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna in the quarter-finals.

Ferdinand would become club captain in his second campaign at Elland Road as he replaced Lucas Radebe which saw him earn a spot in England's 2002 World Cup squad.

Due to United's financial troubles later that same summer the centre-back would be sold for Â£29million to arch rivals Manchester United as he once again broke records to become the most expensive British footballer in history.

Tomas Brolin makes his debut - November 25, 1995

One of Leeds United's biggest transfer flops of all time.

Brolin, who Howard Wilkinson had brought to the club in a deal worth Â£4.5million, made his debut as an 82nd minute substitute at St James' Park against Newcastle United but was unable to save Leeds from a 2-1 defeat.

The Swede who had impressed at both Euro '92 and the World Cup in 1994 would go on to make just 25 appearances for the club scoring four times as a turbulent period followed in West Yorkshire.

Brolin, who clashed heavily with Wilkinson, was sent out on loan just a year later to Zurich and then Parma as the Whites attempted to cut their losses after a disappointing spell.

The Swede was eventually told he had no future at the club by new man at the helm George Graham upon his return after being axed from the club's pre-season tour.

Whites fall to FA Cup upset at Histon - November 30, 2008

A day that many Leeds fan will have etched from the memory.

At a mud-soaked Glass World Stadium United fell to defeat to non-league opposition for the first time in their history. Postman Matthew Langston's first-half header was enough to consign Gary McAllister's side to their fate on a dismal afternoon in atrocious conditions.

Centre-back Lubomir Michalik saw a header hit the post and an effort cleared off the line but it was in vain as United crashed out of the famous competition at the hands of Histon.
