Leeds United: Midfielder Klich linked with Holland return

Mateusz Klich is being linked with a January return to Holland's top flight after slipping further down the order at Leeds United.

Reports in Poland claim Klich will look for a loan move to the continent when the transfer window opens having failed to make more than a single league start in six months with Leeds.

Klich last appeared in the Championship in late September and the Poland international expressed his frustration with a pointed post on Twitter after learning that he would not be part of Thomas Christiansen’s squad to face Barnsley on Saturday, despite Ronaldo Vieira serving a one-match ban.

Christiansen used Klich in all four of United’s League Cup ties earlier this season but handed him his only league start in a 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City on September 26. Klich was partly culpable for Cardiff’s first goal and was replaced early in the second half.

Leeds fended off a late approach from Middlesbrough to sign him from FC Twente in June, paying around £1.5m for his signature, but he failed to find a way into Christiansen’s side during Leeds’ recent run of poor results and 21-year-old Conor Shaughnessy came off the bench after Eunan O’Kane was injured in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Barnsley.

Klich’s prior experience of Holland is believed to have attracted the attention of several Dutch clubs, though United are yet to indicate where they would

consider releasing Klich in January. The 27-year-old is six months into a three-year contract at Elland Road.

Speaking about Klich’s role last week, Christiansen said: “The thing is I have a good squad. I have to choose and leave players out. This is part of football - one moment you are out, the second you are in.”

O’Kane is a doubt for Friday’s clash with Aston Villa having limped out of the clash at Oakwell but Klich is likely to miss out again with Vieira’s short suspension over. The 19-year-old was hit with a one-match ban after his red card in last week’s 4-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
