Elland Road will see its first capacity crowd in almost six years when the Magpies visit Leeds for a Championship clash on Sunday, November 20 for which all remaining general admission tickets have already sold out. Leeds first visit Norwich City today but Monk was happy to applaud the prospect of an upcoming full house at Elland Road against Newcastle, with the head coach believing United are developing a blossoming relationship with their fans in light of the club’s improved form.

“It shows the capability of the club,” said Monk about the Elland Road Newcastle sell-out.

“It’s the first time in six years they’ve had a capacity crowd and it shows how the teams have been progressing. (The performances) show how important that support is.

“The more fans we have behind us, the better of the team. It’s clear. I’ve been talking about that relationship growing game after game, getting a lot stronger. The displays so far have helped create that, but I think the fans realise how important their support is.

“The more fans we have at Elland Road, the better for the team and everyone.

The more travelling away, the better for everyone. It goes hand in hand.

It’s exciting for the players. I don’t know if any of the players in the squad have experienced Elland Road at capacity. They probably haven’t so it’ll be interesting to see how they deal with that situation. But one thing we learned and one of the mistakes we were making was that we had apprehension in our play at the start, We’ve turned that corner now.”

Goals from Luke Murphy and Jack McKay were in vain for Leeds United’s development side yesterday as the under-23s lost a friendly 4-2 against York City.
