Leeds United '˜dodged a bullet' says Ipswich Town boss McCarthy

Frustrated Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy insisted his side deserved a share of the points after losing 3-2 to Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski literally handed the hosts their winner in the 67th minute when he fumbled Pablo Hernandez’s corner into his own net

At the time it gave Leeds a 3-1 lead, Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Kalvin Phillips having earlier netted in the first half either side of an equaliser from Town’s David McGoldrick.

Joe Garner pulled a goal back for Ipswich after Bialkowski’s gaffe, but Leeds held off the Tractor Boys’ challenge to maintain their position at the top of the Championship table.

The result left McCarthy frustrated, believing his players did enough to claim at least a point.

“I am disappointed with the result,” said McCarthy. “I’m even more disappointed because of how well we played.

“They were poor goals to concede, but I thought we were terrific. I thought that in the second half we had one hand on their throat, we just couldn’t turn it into another goal.

“Character is always there in abundance, but we showed a lot of quality today. They (Leeds) know they have dodged a bullet there.”

When asked what Ipswich’s ambitions were this season, McCarthy replied: “My aim always is to p*** all those people off who write me off.

“I’ve been doing it for 25 years and I hope I can continue to do that this season.”
