Sections of the Elland Road faithful believe the Leeds Salute has been around since the 1950s despite a lack of video or photographic evidence.

It was during the late 1980s when the Leeds salute became a staple of the United matchday, a gesture accompanied to renditions of the club anthem ‘Marching On Together’

That era’s most iconic Leeds saluter was Glyn Snodin who scored ten goals in 94 appearances between 1987 and 1992.

By the time that the 1989/90 promotion season came around it was massively popular with the likes of Mel ‘Zico’ Sterland, Vinnie Jones and Chris Kamara.

The salute takes centre stage in the club’s new crest design which has attracted widespread outrage from Whites fans and prompted an online petition against its roll out which has to date attracted nearly 80,000 names.

Bosses at Leeds United have since underlined their commitment to getting fans involved in the decision on the club’s new badge.
