United looked in a spot of bother after squandering several golden opportunities in the opening stages before falling behind to a Nahki Wells strike in the 26th minute.

But Kemar Roofe then equalised in the third and final minute of first-half stoppage time before putting Leeds in front when netting a 53rd-minute penalty awarded for Toni Leistner's handball.

United then squandered further chances but finished the game with all hands on deck as Steve McClaren's Hoops missed good opportunities themselves and piled high balls into the Whites penalty box.

Leeds eventually saw out five minutes of added time to seal their fourth Championship victory in succession and open up a five-point gap to the teams outside of the division's automatic promotion places.

"It was tough in the end," said Shackleton.

"We had to dig in and I thought we did that well. They are the type of games that sometimes you have got to win dirty and dig in and we did that."
