Leeds United 1 Aston Villa 1: Lansbury cancels out Jansson's header in Friday night draw

The Whites took a deserved 19th-minute lead when a towering Jansson outjumped the Villa defence to head home a Pablo Hernandez corner.

But Villa improved after the interval and drew level in the 71st minute when substitute Lansbury drove home a low shot from 20 yards that beat Felix Wiedwald in off the post.

Leeds began brightly but without seriously troubling ‘keeper Sam Johnstone as Samu Saiz saw an early effort blocked before Kalvin Phillips blazed a long range effort over the bar.

Villa had their first sniff in the ninth minute when Albert Adomah fired straight at Wiedwald, after which Wiedwald easily collected a cross from Robert Snodgrass.

Villa then looked in trouble in the 15th minute when Johnstone failed to deal with a cross but from a Saiz lay-off, Hernandez blazed his shot over the bar.

But after Wiedwald had easily saved a low effort from nodgrass, Johnstone was left picking the ball out of his net following a bullet header from Jansson in the 19th minute.

After good work from Caleb Ekuban to win a corner, a swinging delivery from Hernandez was jumped on to by a towering Jansson who escaped Chris Samba to smash home an unstoppable header.

From another corner soon after that was also won by Ekuban, Ronaldo Vieira saw his low shot blocked before Villa cleared.

And only a vital interception saved Villa in the 31st minute when a square ball from Saiz looked destined to provide the lively Ekuban with a tap in.

Villa then went close just one minute later when Glenn Whelan fired their best chance yet wide.

But Leeds had dominated though the half ended on a sour note for the Whites as Hernandez had to be substituted with what looked like a hamstring injury for Kemar Roofe.

United then had another chance in the third minute of added time when a Gjanni Alioiski free-kick found Liam Cooper who put his header well over the bar.

After a quiet start to the second half, Villa squandered a fine chance in the 55th minute when Adomah was allowed in to face Wiedwald but the German held firm to save Adomah’s low shot with his legs.

At the other end, a fine ball from Saiz whizzed across the Villa area needing any sort of touch to double United’s lead.

United were then deprived of a second goal two minutes after the hour when Cooper headed home a free-kick from Roofe only to be dismayed by the flag on the touchline.

Leeds then survived a scare in the 68th minute when Wiedwald missed his punch from a Villa corner but Lansbury scuffed his shot.

But Lansbury made no mistake three minutes later when driving at the Whites defence before unleashing a fine low effort from 20 yards that beat Wiedwald and nestled into the net in off the post.

Neither side were then able to create a serious chance thereafter as part of a Friday night draw at Elland Road.
