The Macedonia international is a major target of United’s and the Elland Road club want to seal his arrival from Switzerland before their pre-season tour to Austria begins this weekend.

Leeds and Lugano moved closer to a deal last week and Lugano appeared resigned to losing the winger in the days ahead.

A story on the club’s official website described a training session on Sunday as “probably one of the last” that Alioski would complete with his Lugano team-mates.

The club went on to describe his “sale to an English club” as “imminent”, an indication that Leeds are on course to win the fight to sign him.

Swiss club Basel have shown a strong interest in Alioski, who scored 16 times for Lugano in Switzerland’s top flight last term, and held the added incentive of Champions League football next season.

Leeds, however, are fighting to bring Alioski to England amid ongoing efforts to finalise the signings of attacking midfielder Samuel Saiz from Huesca and striker Caleb Ekuban from Chievo.

Saiz began a medical with Leeds this morning ahead of a £3m move and Ekuban flew in from Italy last night with United hopeful of sealing his transfer in the next 48 hours.
