Heavy Woollen League: Heavy goals deluge makes mockery of weekend wash-out

Only eight games survived the weekend’s wet weather but there were 35 goals across three games in the third tier with Clifton romping to a 15-1 haymaker at Punch Bowl AFC (Cleckheaton).

The crazy victory put Clifton fifth with Punch Bowl sat third bottom after the heavy defeat in which Josh Wood netted their consolation.

Not to be outdone, runaway leaders Hanging Heaton smashed rock-bottom visitors St Ignatius 13-1 to move eight points clear at the top.

Dave Hall and James Keen both scored hat-tricks, with Jamie Baulk and Tom Ramsden hitting doubles as Ryan Ellis, Chris Goodwin and Sam Hetherington also all added a goal each. Battyeford also climbed to third place after winning 4-1 at fourth-bottom Batley Celtics.

And there was another ‘cricket score’ in Division Two as leaders Old Bank WMC stayed six points clear as they demolished Snowdon 14-1, led by four goals from Josh Cooke.

Steven Browne added a hat-trick, supported by two each from Robert Evans and James Hardwick plus strikes from Sam Womersley and Tom Frizzell.

Batley Irish Nash lie in second place after beating Six Lane Ends 2-0 thanks to late goals from Sean Housecroft and Tom Yarnold despite a heroic performance from Carl Cammish in the Six Lane Ends goal.

Saville Arms, meanwhile, raced into a two-goal lead through Lewis Tolson and Adam Womersley but were pegged back by Overthorpe Sports Club Reserves’ Lee Davey and Craig Fryer, who earned a 2-2 draw.

In the only match played in the Premier Division, Oakwell Motel climbed to seventh place after a 5-2 success at home to Millbridge WMC, who are one point and one place above them.

Jonny Beverley hit a brace for the hosts who also netted through Jason Elliott, Darren Fothergill and Lee Hepenstall. Millbridge replied through a Patrick Sykes double.

In the Championship the bottom two sides clashed at Crawshaw Street with second-bottom Birstall St Patricks emerging 7-2 winners over Ravenswharfe. Alex Howdle led the way for Birstall with a hat-trick with further goals from Tom Williams, Jean-Marie Julienne, Joe Ratcliff and Scot Minto, a penalty in his first game back from injury.

Josh Walton hit both goals for Ravenswharfe, who remain without a single point from their eight games.
