Guiseley’s Nathan Newall leaves it very late to snatch a point for ten-man Lions

Nathan Newall scored his first senior goal for the Lions in the 96th minute to ensure they gained a point.

After the draw, Guiseley joint-manager Marcus Bignot said. “This shows a real character to face a really good Boston side and get something from the game, we can build from this.”

Boston started brightly, some good link up play between Jordan Thewlis and Jordan Burrow, saw the latter well placed for a shot but Hamza Bencherif was able to make a crucial tackle to deny him.

Guiseley nearly took the lead just before the half-hour mark, a poor clearance by keeper Ross Fitzsimmons fell to Kian Harratt who shot first time from 35 yards out, but his effort hit the crossbar.

Just after half-time, the hosts took the lead through Terry Hawkridge’s free-kick from 20 yards out, it was aimed low and hard into the bottom left-hand corner.

After the break, the visitors nearly grabbed a goal, when ex-Guiseley defender Scott Garner saw his clearance ricochet off ex-Boston United forward Jonathan Wafula and towards goal, Fitzsimmons though read the situation well and saved.

Any hope of an equaliser looked lost when the Lions went down to ten men, after Prince Ekpolo had to go off injured after being caught by Garner, and with all substitutes used, they had to play on a man down.

But with seconds left on the clock Newall was in the right place and hit a fine effort on the half-volley to ensure Guiseley went back to Yorkshire with a valuable point.

Elsewhere, Bradford Park Avenue won 2-0 at Hereford FC thanks to goals in the first and 38th minutes by the prolific Oli Johnson.

In League Two, Harrogate Town were held 0-0 at home by Stevenage.

The result saw Simon Weaver’s side drop to eighth in the table, but they are still well in with the leading pack.
