Matlock almost scored moments into the game when they hit the bar, as Spencer Harris saw his fine effort that looked to be heading in, rise at the last moment and go out.

But Town were reduced to ten men, just seven minutes into the game, as a strong tackle led to an off-the-ball altercation that resulted in Liam Hughes – who played at Nethemoor during their last season in the National League – being shown a straight red card.

The Lions took the lead with 20 minutes on the clock, when Kaine Felix was brought down in the area and Lebrun Mbeka confidently stepped up to score once again from the spot.

Just before the break, a long throw found captain Hamza Bencherif who headed just over.

After substitute Kayde Coppin was sent off in the tunnel at half-time, Matlock were down to nine men on the pitch when Adam Yates was shown a second yellow card for tripping Felix.

The Lions doubled their lead after George Cantrill chased what looked like a lost cause, kept the ball in play, put in a cross to the area and eventually it found Jonathan Wafula who had a tap in.

Matlock had the last significant chance with Ryan Qualter hitting the crossbar with a header, as the Lions kept a clean sheet and booked their place into the next round.

Elsewhere it was a bad night for Yorkshire clubs as Farsley Celtic, York City and Tadcaster Albion all bowed out of the competition.

Celts lost 3-1 at home to AFC Fylde, with Jake Charles’ 85th-minute goal coming witht he visitors three-up. York went out 1-0 at Chorley, while Tadcaster suffered a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Darlington, with Jack Cook (75) on target for the visitors.
