Guiseley eyeing derby double after victory at York City

Both sides scored within the opening 10 minutes of the game.

Guiseley took the lead after just five minutes when a cross was put into the area and unmarked Hamza Bencherif was in the right place to flick the ball in against his old club.

The scores were soon level when Kieran Green got past five Guiseley players and, from the edge of the area, picked his spot and placed an effort into the bottom right-hand corner.

After that blistering start, the game started to become a midfield battle.

The Lions went close just after half-an-hour when another cross caused problems. This time, it was cleared to Felix, who took a touch and fired towards goal but saw his shot hit a body before being cleared.

Just before the break, the Minstermen saw a well-worked move force Marcus Dewhurst into a smart save, Jordan Burrow having taken aim from 25 yards out.

The second half started evenly with few chances being created during a 20-minute spell.

Adriano Moke tried to take matters into his own hands when he burst forward and shot, but fired just over.

It looked like a draw was on the cards until second-placed York failed to clear the ball and Felix, on the edge of the area, poked a shot into the net to send the away fans into a frenzy and secured a big three points for the Lions.

After the victory, Guiseley joint-manager Marcus Bignot said: “I’m so proud of the team, we kept going against a very good side and got a massive win.”

There was real frustration for York City chief Steve Watson.

He said: “It’s really disappointing. We had chances to win it, we just have to refocus ahead of the next games.”

Tenth-placed Guiseley have another Yorkshire derby next up when they face fifth-placed Farsley Celtic on New Year’s Day.

York entertain bottom club Bradford Park Avenue, who suffered a 5-0 defeat against Farsley on Saturday.

Defeat to Guiseley, leaves York four points behind King’s Lynn, who have a game in hand but who were held to a 2-2 draw at Alfreton Town on Saturday.

Farsley cruised to their 5-0 home victory over Bradford Park Avenue, who continue to have troubles at both ends of the pitch, having now failed to net for four contests.

Tom Allan saw an early chance cleared off the line by Avenue’s Ryan Toulson and the visitors had to wait until two minutes into the second period before the floodgates opened.

A volleyed cross from Adam Clayton was turned in at the far post by Nathan Cartman and Will Hayhurst doubled the advantage from the penalty spot moments later after Isaac Marriott had brought down Tyler Walton.

Dave Syers made it 3-0 just past the hour, courtesy of a clinical strike, before centre-back Jack Higgins found the top corner with an acrobatic volley for the goal of the game.

A second penalty was won and converted by Hayhurst to wrap up matters for the hosts.

FC Halifax Town and Harrogate Town signed off for 2019 with welcome victories.

Jack Redshaw’s second-half penalty earned Halifax Town a richly-deserved and much-needed 1-0 win over Chesterfield at The Shay.

Jack Muldoon struck his 10th goal of the season as Harrogate maintained their play-off challenge with a 2-0 win at bottom club Chorley.

After an encouraging first-half, the Shaymen stepped it up after the interval and banished their Boxing Day blues with a super display.

Third-bottom Chesterfield had offered next to nothing, but went close to taking the lead when former Shay loanee Mike Fondop-Talom headed narowly wide.

Redshaw brought the game to life with a terrific run and shot that flew narrowly over a few minutes before the interval, which was the closest Halifax came in the first half.

It continued to be nearly but not quite for Halifax, as Jeff King found Allen to the right of the area, but his low shot from a tight angle was saved by Shwan Jalal.

Halifax went closer still when Redshaw’s excellent dinked cross found Staunton unmarked near the penalty spot, but he headed over.

The pressure finally told when Redshaw was brought down and he sent Jalal the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Redshaw saw a shot beaten away by Jalal before visiting substitute Tom Denton’s header was held by Sam Johnson.

Redshaw should have sealed it but his low shot from an angle was kept out by Jalal.

Muldoon gave Harrogate Town a half-time lead and former Huddersfield striker Jon Stead extended it midway through the second half to make it back-to-back wins for Simon Weaver’s side.

Former Lincoln forward Muldoon, who scored twice in Harrogate’s 4-1 win against Hartlepool on Boxing Day, latched on to Connor Hall’s ball over the top and made no mistake in the 27th minute.

Chorley goalkeeper Matt Urwin pulled off an excellent save to deny Will Smith but was helpless soon after when rounded by Stead, who neatly slid home the visitors’ second.

Halifax entertain Stockport and Harrogate head to Hatlepool on New Year’s Day.

PONTEFRACT Collieries moved in fourth-place in the BetVictor League North West Division following a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Dunston on Saturday.

The only goal of the game came via the penalty spot in the 13th minute – Connor Smythe making no mistake from 12 yards. The result leaves Pontefract eight points behind leaders Workington with fully four games in hand and having only played four home games so far.

In the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, second-placed Hemsworth MW maintained their pursuit of leaders Penistone Church thanks to a 3-2 victory at home to Silsden.

After taking the lead through Harry Viggars, Hemsworth fell 2-1 behind with 26 minutes to play. But further goals for Viggars and Ryan Carroll meant the home side sit one point behind the leaders.

Fifth-placed Liversedge enjoyed a fine 4-2 victory at Bottesford. Goals from Alfie Raw, Michael Bottomley, Oliver Fearon and Jack Hardacre put Liversedge in control before two late goals for the home side.

Sixth-placed Yorkshire Amateur came from 3-2 behind to win 5-3 at Athersley Recreation.

The Ammers’ goals came via Adam Priestley, Aiden Savory, Matthew Sykes, Stephen Crawford and Ashley Flynn.

Two goals in the last two minutes from Sean Hunter saw Garforth Town rescue a point in a 2-2 draw at Maltby Main while Knaresborough Town were thumped 4-0 at Penistone Church.

In Division One, Nostell Miners Welfare chalked up a much-needed 3-1 win at Ollerton Town. The goals came from Jack Waldron, Amir Berchil and Kane Reece.

Fifth-placed Glasshoughton Welfare lost ground on the leaders when they went down 2-0 at home to Winterton Rangers while Selby Town drew 0-0 at pace-setters Skegness Town. Harrogate Railway were beaten 5-2 at Campion.
