Remarkably, pre-season is almost over and the Community Shield, the traditional start point for the new season, is almost upon us.

This year’s Wembley fixture will be contested between league champions Liverpool and FA Cup winners Arsenal who triumphed at the national stadium just under a month ago.

Liverpool are seeking their first Community Shield win since 2006, while Arsenal are looking to claim their second trophy under Mikel Arteta.

Both sides have won the Shield on 15 occasions.

When is the Community Shield?

Usually the Premier League season would be well underway by now but due to the coronavirus pandemic the football calendar has been shifted backwards.

The 2020 Community Shield will kick off at 4.30pm on August 29.

Where can I watch the fixture?

BT Sport holds UK broadcasting rights.

It will provide coverage from 4pm on its channels BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate.

What about the Women’s Community Shield?

Women Super League champions Chelsea will do battle with FA Cup holders Man City prior to the men’s fixture.

Live coverage of the fixture will be shown on BBC One from 12.15 with the match kicking off at 12.30pm.

Liverpool should be with star defender Virgil Van Dijk after he limped off during a pre-season friendly with RB Leipzig.

Jurgen Klopp said: “Virg only looks like he has a piercing now and has a plaster on it. It should not be, and is, no problem... In the moment it is of course not cool but there will not be a problem.”

Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain continue their rehabilitation from long-term injuries, but Trent Alexander-Arnold should be in contention after a back injury.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal could offer competitive debuts to Willian and William Saliba.

Shkrodan Mustafi, Callum Chambers, Pablo Mari and Gabriel Martinelli will all miss out.

Arteta has yet to reveal who will start between the sticks with both Bernd Leno and Emiliano Martinez available for selection.

“I’m delighted to have both of them. But they both know that on the first day of pre-season, you start again and fight for your place and show us who is the one that deserves the chance to start.”
