Andy Ritchie: It's time for Leeds United to show their resilience

I have had that sort of thing when I was manager at Oldham Athletic.

We played down at Reading and the opposition bench were running in front of our technical area and celebrating goals and punching the air right in front of us.

You just have to try and rise above it but I don’t think I’ve ever had somebody run 70-odd yards along the pitch and then jump all over the players.

It’s a bit of a new one on me and I just thought that David Wagner over-stepped the mark a little bit in terms of having a bit of decorum, if you like, and I think it would have annoyed me.

I know Garry Monk reacted in the way that he did and he did walk into him when David returned but it was just an unsavoury incident wasn’t it?

Both of them probably regret it now and they will take their punishments.

You’ve just got to get on with things.

I’m not sure if the loss to Huddersfield was a significant result but it’s a result that Leeds wouldn’t have wanted because, obviously, Town are in and around them.

Leeds want to be taking points off those teams around them but I thought Huddersfield were maybe the better side in terms of the problems they caused.

Leeds had to make a couple of last-ditch interventions to stop certain goal-bound efforts and I thought Rob Green played very well.

He kept the side in it with a couple of really good saves.

I don’t think you could argue with the result but Leeds have got to get on with it and they have been on a great run.

They got beat two weeks ago but straight away they got back on the winning road and I think that’s the way they’ve got to be.

I think they have got that in them or at least they seem to have.

They seem to have that little bit of resilience and Garry will be looking for a reaction to the defeat anyway.

He will be saying: ‘right, come on, let’s have the same reaction that we had a few weeks ago.’

He’ll be saying: ‘We’ve had a defeat and we are all brassed off about it but let’s put ourselves back together again and go on another winning streak’, starting with today’s game at home to Cardiff.

That game will see Neil Warnock and Sol Bamba return to Elland Road and you can’t write it sometimes in football can you?

It’s like when Brian McDermott’s first game back as a manager was against Leeds.

It’s just one of those things and Neil will want to win as much as anyone else, not just because it’s against Leeds United but just because he’ll want to win.

The Sol Bamba thing adds a bit more spice for him, too, I would have thought.

He will not want to get beaten and he will probably want to prove a little bit of a point.

It will be an interesting game but with home advantage I would expect Leeds to win and I would expect them to beat Bristol City at Elland Road on Tuesday night as well but it’s easier said than done isn’t it?

Garry will be targeting six points – I can’t see why not – and he needs them because he needs to be keeping the pressure on the teams above.

Chris Wood also scooped the Championship’s ‘player of the month’ award having scored 21 goals already this season which is fantastic.

In any league, to be getting 20 goals already is fantastic.

He’s found a rich vein of form, he has found himself the right football team and he has grown into that role of playing up front on his own.

I was one who thought that maybe Wood did not have enough pace to play in that role but I think he has shown that he has and his intelligence and his work and his appreciation of what needs doing has become first-class.

I think he would say he still has room for improvement but his goals have been priceless for Leeds this season and he’s managed to keep relatively fit as well.

It’s been a fantastic achievement and I’d like to offer my congratulations to him.
