Bradford

Hudson and Watts spin in for the Saints

IT proved to be another good day for the spin bowlers as they made decisive contributions in all four Division One games.

Leaders Pudsey St Lawrence were indebted to their slow bowlers, Tom Hudson (4-42) and Steve Watts (3-35), for setting up their eight-wicket win at Saltaire.

The home side, despite the efforts of Tariq Mehboob (60) and Shoukat Ali (49), were dismissed for 148.

St Lawrence eased to their target with Mark Robertshaw, who topped the Division One batting averages in 2014, making an unbeaten 94 with 14 fours.

St Lawrence are eight points ahead of Woodlands, who defeated Hanging Heaton by 68 runs with left-arm spinner Chris Brice taking 4-41 as the home side were dismissed for 126 despite Joe Fraser’s 71.

Brice prevented Hanging Heaton from capitalising on the fine spell of 5-51 from their off-spinner Ian Philliskirk as Woodlands were dismissed for 194. Logan Weston (42) and Pieter Swanepoel (40) were their main contributors.

Pudsey Congs moved up to third after inflicting a first defeat of the season on Bradford & Bingley. Spinners Kez Ahmed (5-31) and Nick Lindley (3-24) set up the six-wicket success.

Bradford & Bingley were restricted to 123-8 in their 30 overs a side contest. Opener Charlie Best (30) proved to be their top scorer.

Congs were guided to their victory target by opener Lindley (37) and Joe Greaves (30)

Champions Cleckheaton registered their first win and added to the early woes of Farsley as they triumphed by 99 runs.

Cleckheaton made 216-6 in 40 overs with Ian Nicholson making a fine 63 and James Lee an unbeaten 42. Farsley crumbled to 117 all out.

Yorkshire ECB

Tattersall sparkles in last-ball thriller

NEEDING 22 to win off the final over with one wicket in hand, Yorkshire Academy’s Jared Warner and Jonathan Read had made 18 as David Foster came in for the last ball. But a sharp stumping by Jack Potter trapped Warner and clinched a thriller for Harrogate.

Despite Australian Connor Ryan having to go to hospital after a ball hit his cheek, Harrogate stormed to 239-5.

England Under-19 Jonathan Tattersall hit 108 not out off 125 balls to take his tally in the first five matches to 431 at an average of 143.7. He found plenty of support from George Ross (52) and Foster (29) despite the efforts of Karl Carver (4-76).

Academy’s middle order, especially Matthew Waite (48), kept them in the hunt and Warner (30) put them so close, but Potter and Foster (4-64) had the last word.

Jason Booth (65) was involved in two half-century stands as Barnsley recovered from 45-2 to make 259-8 at Driffield. Ali Jahangir (4-11) and Callum Bethel (3-28) then combined to dismiss the home side for 119.

Openers David Barrick (83) and Tom Appleyard (62) put on 151 as Hull made 228-9 at Rotherham before James Moorhouse (106) and Mark Cummins (75no) put on 186 to set up a nine-wicket win.

Lewis Brown included two wickets in two balls on his way to 4-45 as York were restricted to 204 but Doncaster struggled despite 41 contributed by their No 6 Luke Townsend.

David Wainwright took 6-23 as Cleethorpes collapsed from 105-3 to 130 all out, and then top scored with 33 in Castleford’s winning reply.

A half-century from Will Root was not enough to save Sheffield Collegiate from defeat, opener Duncan Heath (62no) taking Appleby Frodingham past the 128 total with three wickets in hand.

Morley and Blake unite as Otley make move up

OTLEY looked to be in for a sticky afternoon when they lost two wickets with only 15 runs on the board but Josh Atkinson (53) and David Hester (47) steadied things with a stand of 87.

Atkinson then put on a half-century with James Davies (80) who followed that up with another half-century stand with Andy Rhodes (61) as the home side cruised to 271-8.

Steeton were going along well at 52-1 but then lost two quick wickets and never recovered, Ben Morley (4-13) and Sam Blake (3-24) bowling them out for 132.

That put Otley up to second behind Beckwithshaw, who eased past Follifoot.

Rafes Ishitaq took 4-49 as Beckwithshaw were restricted to 178-8, John Inglis top scoring with 85. But Harry Lister (4-24) made sure the visitors got home by 46 runs.

Bilton moved up to third with a comfortable win at North Leeds after a century, fourth-wicket stand between Michael Donnelly (54) and Odge Davey (67) put them on the way to 249.

Mustahsan Shah and Richard Spittlehouse picked up three cheap wickets as the home side were dismissed for 167 despite the efforts of Andy Carson (47) and Taran Chana, who followed up a four-wicket spell with 48.

Burley dropped out of the top three after Kirkstall’s Stephen Brown (4-8) and Tom Webb (3-32) skittled them for 96. Stephen Wilkinson (36no) saw the hosts home by four wickets.

The other games in the division were washed out as was Division Two leaders Colton’s trip to Pool which allowed Illingworth to climb into top spot after overcoming previously unbeaten Green Lane.

Illingworth No 8 Stephen Cook hit a half-century to help them to 172 which proved too many for Lane, who ended on 153-9.

Huddersfield

Lloyd helps new boys rout the champions

CHAMPIONS Hoylandswaine slumped to their first defeat of the season after being routed for 56 at Premiership debutants Moorlands.

Kesrick Williams (39) was the only Hoylandswaine batsman who reached double figures after they lost their first six wickets for just 15 runs.

Moorlands’ Australian all-rounder Chris Lloyd snapped up 6-12 and Darrell Sykes and Andrew Walker each claimed two wickets.

Michael Rounding hit 33 not out as Moorlands gained their first top-flight win in 19.1 overs.

Scholes, Honley and Barkisland remain unbeaten.

Tim Taylor’s undefeated 54 steered Honley to an eight-wicket victory against Skelmanthorpe, who were toppled for 102 by Ritchie Howarth who bagged 6-11 in a 15-over spell that included nine maidens.

Jamie Summerscales hammered 89 as Barkisland overhauled Kirkburton’s 186 with three balls remaining in a 45-over match.

Asif Hussain (61) and Nick Sharp (48no) led Kirkburton’s scoring.

Shepley’s Nasir Jamal (5-23) restricted winless Golcar to 159-9 in a 40-over game.

Christian Smith (43no), Amar Rashid (41) and Tom Denton (37) led the way as Shepley knocked off the runs.

Joe Carter (63no) and Tom Chadwick (47) put on 62 in Scholes’ eight-wicket win in a 25-over contest at Elland, for whom Niall Lockley struck 54.

Abdul Wahid smashed 112 and Martin Sykes and Shershan Naidoo struck half-centuries in Shelley’s 306-7 against Slaithwaite who managed 202 in reply, despite Alex Walker’s 56.

The Championship’s top three – Holmfirth, Armitage Bridge and Clayton West – all won.

Scholes next up for Hoylandswaine

Holders Hoylandswaine, aiming to lift the Sykes Cup for a third successive season, will host Scholes in the second round next Sunday after beating Delph and Dobcross by 10 wickets.

Captain Richard Wilkinson claimed 4-22 as Delph were toppled for 132 and Hoylandswaine openers Gharib Nawaz and Alex Morris (32no) knocked off the runs in just 16.4 overs.

Nawaz hit five sixes and 14 fours in 95no off 56 balls as Hoylandswaine bounced back from the previous day’s Premiership loss at Moorlands.

Last season’s beaten finalists Golcar booked a home tie against Linthwaite with a nine-wicket win against Clayton West who were skittled for 81 by Tim Welsford (4-24) and Jake Lockwood (3-24).

Thurstonland beat Emley by 15 runs to earn a home match against fellow Conference side Rastrick who pulled off an upset when Jacob Waterson (73) and Mitchell McCoach (4-23) led them to an 86-run win over Premiership Skelmanthorpe.

Thomas Joraslafsky (61no and 3-38) was Championship side Marsden’s match-winner at Premiership Slaithwaite.

Meltham’s Jack Hinchcliffe (5-15) routed Cartworth Moor for 75 to set up a seven-wicket win while Michael Rounding hit 86 and Petrus Lombard claimed 4-17 in Moorlands’ 145-run victory at Denby.

Tim Sykes (76no) and Eddie Wilson (68) put on 114 for the second wicket as Honley posted 196-4 at Elland, who were bowle out for 60 by Ritchie Howarth (5-13).

Asif Hussain (92no) and Jonathan Butterfield (60no) shared an unbroken 143-stand for the fourth wicket as Kirkburton overhauled Lascelles Hall’s 205 that featured a century by Aqeel Mukhtar.

The second round draw is Hoylandswaine v Scholes, Honley v Kirkburton, Moorlands v Kirkheaton, Golcar v Linthwaite, Shepley v Meltham, Broad Oak v Shelley, Thurstonland v Rastrick, Marsden v Barkisland.

South Yorkshire

Bothma strikes back as Wickersley triumph

AS former England opener Geoff Boycott would say, many people can get runs on flat, dry tracks, but when it is damp and seaming around, there is no substitute for skill and experience and so it proved on Saturday.

Whitley Hall moved to the top, overcoming Conisbrough, who struggled to 124 all out.

The Whitley batsmen found conditions no easier, but they had captain Jim Tasker holding things together with an unbeaten 50 – twice as many as anyone else – to take Whitley over the line for seven down.

Treeton’s Steve Foster has a similar pedigree.

The former England Amateur captain took 4-23 in 13 overs to keep Coal Aston to 123, despite a determined innings of 49 from David Rodgers, and then, after Charlie Roebuck had made 46, steered Treeton home with 30 not out.

Elsecar overcame Houghton Main in a very similar game, Andy Ivill taking 5-38 as Houghton were bowled out for 122.

The experience of Jason Meadows (54no) and former Yorkshire all-rounder Ian Swallow took Elsecar over the line after they were wobbling on 89-5.

Wickersley had lost after being all out for 55 two weeks ago and they must have thought it was all going to happen again as James Stuart (5-25) and Steve Reid (4-44) rolled them over for 78 at Tickhill.

But their key player was Johan Bothma, who made 22, and then out-bowled everyone with 7-40, the best figures of the day, as Wickersley won by 15 runs.

On Saturday, Aston Hall and Darfield look to have difficult tasks against Wickersley and Whitley Hall, respectively, while Hallam are at Conisbrough, Tickhill go to Elsecar, Coal Aston travel to Houghton Main and Treeton are at Wath.

Central Yorkshire

All-round star Sadler leads Ossett challenge

OPENER Kristian Ward hit an unbeaten 121 as Townville inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Premiership champions Methley.

Ward guided Townville to 222-6 and Anurag Verma (4-31) and Joe Finnigan (2-38) limited leaders Methley’s reply to 154-8, which included a half-century by Richard Foster.

Ossett maintained their challenge when former Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire all-rounder John Sadler (43no and 4-25) led them to a nine-wicket win against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Matthew Jordan’s unbeaten 62 guided Wakefield Thornes to a five-wicket victory at Altofts, who were routed for 106 by Ravinda Paliyaguruge (4-39), Faisal Irfan (3-25) and Matthew Varley (2-39).

Eric Austin smashed five sixes and 14 fours in a rapid century and Nick Kaye hit 60 as Birstall piled up 235-7 in a 40-over match at Buttershaw St Paul’s, whose reply fell 36 runs short, despite James Robson’s 93 and Paul Carroll’s 40.

Daniel Wilbor (51) and Patrick Hinchliffe (4-4) gave Carlton the edge at Batley.

Tariq Hussain (4-24) and Muhammed Shahnawaz (3-47) bowled out Carlton for 135.

Batley looked to be coasting to victory when Sardar Khan steered them to 95-3 but they fell for 110 after losing their last seven wickets for just 15 runs.

Will Stiff’s 6-34 was in vain for Hunslet Nelson in a 34-over match at Wrenthorpe. Stiff and Robert Barker (2-19) toppled Wrenthorpe for 122 but James Glynn (3-27), Chris Leaf (2-24), Jordan Sleightholme (2-13) and Jack Rich (2-43) kept Hunslet to 110-9.

Nick Downward (67no), Alex Leyshon (3-25) and Mark Atkinson (3-10) steered Wakefield St Michael’s to their first Championship win at Hopton Mills.

York Senior

Jackson holds Acomb at bay

Woodhouse Grange remain top after four wickets from Josh Jackson helped them get the better of a draw at Acomb as the top two went head-to-head.

Michael Hattee finished unbeaten on 48 after Chris Bilton (45) and Nick Hadfield (37) had laid the foundation for the visitors’ 179-6, Mark Bell (4-56) taking four of the six wickets to fall.

The home side maintained their unbeaten start to the season but could only manage 128-7 in reply as Jackson (4-39) held them at bay, Matthew Dale top scoring with 30.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge climbed above Acomb into second place with a five wicket victory at home to Fenner.

In a rain-affected match the hosts made 111-5 from 29 overs thanks largely to an unbeaten 38 from Russell Robinson, Richard Barker finishing with 3-23.

Just two batsmen reached double figures, Luke Laybourne (58) and Grant Van Es (17), in the visitors’ 109 as Mark Fisher claimed 5-56.

Stamford Bridge’s Stuart Boyle made the day’s highest score finishing unbeaten just five short of his century, and he shared a stand of 103 with Sam Tennant (38) as their side chased down Dunnington’s 170-7 for the loss of just two wickets.

Jack Bolam (84) and Jake Murphy (48) had done their best to provide a challenging total despite the efforts of Dom Rhodes (4-54).

The result leaves Dunnington still searching for their first win and saw them drop to the foot of the table.
