Some of the world’s best cricketers have been snapped up in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction for this year’s tournament.

All eight franchises made new signings to give their teams a fresh look ahead of the 14th edition of the 20-over cricket competition, to be held in India.

The auction saw all-rounders in demand with South African Chris Morris becoming the most expensive cricketer in the IPL Auction history.

Defending champions Mumbai Indians signed Arjun Tendulkar, son of Indian legend Sachin, for £20k in another notable pick, ahead of the 2021 IPL.

When did the IPL 2021 schedule start?

Ever since its first tournament, in 2008, the IPL has tended to take place from April.

The first match of the 2021 tournament saw Mumbai Indians face Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai.

The 2021 schedule sees a match played almost every day through April and May, concluding with the final on 30 May.

Eight teams will play each other twice before three qualifying matches, which sees first play second and the loser from that match play the winner of the third and fourth placed teams for a place in the final, where the IPL champions will be crowned.

Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad are all involved.

Where is the 2021 IPL tournament taking place?

The Covid pandemic has had an impact on many aspects of life, including sport, and cricket is not immune to its effects.

In 2020, the IPL was moved from India to the United Arab Emirates so that the tournament could still go ahead while adopting virus measures.

But now, the Covid situation in India is changing - which has seen fans return to grounds, the IPL tournament will return to its home country.

The IPL 2021 cricket tournament is being televised on Sky Sports Cricket.

Who is the most expensive IPL signing?

Morris was sold to Rajasthan Royals for a record-breaking £1.6m in an auction which also saw England’s Moeen Ali sold to Chennai Super Kings for £700,000.

Royal Challengers Bangalore spent £1.5m on Kylie Jamieson and a further £1.4m on Glenn Maxwell, and the Punjab Kings spent £1.4m to secure the services of Jhye Richardson.

Krishnappa Gowtham was sold to Chennai Super Kings for £925k, Riley Meredith sold to Punjab Kings for £800k and the same franchise spent £525k on Shahrukh Khan.

Will any of England’s cricketers play in IPL 2021?

Ali will be one of 12 English players in the IPL after eight fellow internationals were retained by their respective franchises for the upcoming campaign.

Eoin Morgan, who captains England’s white ball teams, will feature for Kolkata Knight Riders and will face some of his international team-mates in the tournament.

Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler are part of the Rajasthan squad; Jonny Bairstow remains with the Sunrisers Hyderabad; Chris Woakes stays with Delhi Capitals; Chris Jordan with the Punjab Kings and Sam Curran will team up with Ali in Chennai.

Dawid Malan, who currently tops the ICC T20 batting rankings, will get his first experience of the IPL when he was picked up by Punjab Kings for £150k; Tom Curran (£500k) and Sam Billings (£200k) will join Woakes in Delhi.
