Boxing: Jones makes winning return to ring in home town

Friday night saw the return of Leeds boxer Damon Jones to the ring for the first time since July last year on the Mark Bateson and Camp Detox promotion.

Jones (14-1) put in a controlled display on home turf against decent Simone Lucas (8-29-5). Jones used his superior boxing to score a 60-54 victory over six rounds.

Fight of the night was the four-round draw between hometown Russ Midgeley ( 0-7-2) and Hull’s Luke Fash ( 1-3-1). Fash was knocked down in the first and second but showed brilliant powers of recovery for the final rounds to finish on 38 points apiece.

Halifax-born Jack Sellers (2-0) displayed an impressive array of shots overcoming tough Daryl Sharp (1-2). There was also first pro wins for Leeds pair Sean Hare (1-1) and Scott Aitken (1-0) over Scott Hillman (0-5) and Curtis Gargano (0-13-1) respectively. Both Hare and Aitken showed controlled aggression to pick up wide points wins.

York’s Paul Gorden (1-0-1) also picked up a first win over Aaron Robinson (0-11-0). Bradford’s Bobby McGhie (1-0) picked up his first pro win over Liam Wright (0-5) in a fast paced encounter.

Talented Hamid Ghaz (6-0) closed the show with an entertaining points triumph over Hungarian Pal Olah (1-1).

Adil Anwar (22-5) also picked up a win after his opponent, Poland’s Sylwester Walczak (4-21-2) retired hurt after the first round.
