Shining bright – why the Yorkshire Dales is one of the best places for stargazing this spring.

There is so much to love about spring – the sunshine, the flowers and blossoms and the mood-boosting longer days.

Another brilliant bonus of spring is the stargazing opportunities. The milder weather and clearer nights create the perfect conditions to spot constellations, planets and, if you are lucky, the Northern Lights.

Stargazing can be fun for the whole family and is a great excuse to get out in the open and explore. You could even go on a stargazing camping trip this Easter for a real off-grid adventure.

When it comes to where to go stargazing, those in Yorkshire do not need to venture too far.

The Yorkshire Dales is home to some of the darkest skies in the country, with large areas completely free from local light pollution, making it one of the best places for stargazing.

The conditions are so perfect, the Yorkshire Dales National Park has been designated a Dark Sky Reserve by DarkSky International.

According to the Yorkshire Dales National Park website, you could see as many as 2,000 stars on a clear night. It is also possible to see the Milky Way as well as the planets and meteors in most places, too. When the conditions are right, you might even be lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights.

There are four designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites in the Yorkshire Dales National Park – at Hawes and Malham National Park Visitor Centres, Buckden National Park Car Park and Tan Hill Inn. With parking and facilities, these are great locations to begin your stargazing adventures but most parts ofa the National Park re great for stargazing and the more remote you are from light pollution, the better.

Top tips for a dazzling stargazing experience this spring

· Avoid light pollution. Heading somewhere away from busy towns with minimal light pollution will give you the best chance of spotting stars and planets in the dark sky. Waiting until later in the evening and heading somewhere higher can also help you get a clearer view.

· Time it right. Look out for the new moon phases as it is easiest to see the stars if there is no moon. The next new moon will be on April 27 when there will be a slim crescent moon, meaning the moon doesn't illuminate the sky, allowing for a clearer view of stars and planets.

· Check the weather. Although spring can be milder and clear, there may still be the odd days when there are some clouds or a bit of rain, which would hamper your stargazing efforts. Spring evenings can also still feel chilly so taking warm clothing is also a good idea.

· Bring the right equipment. If you are planning to be outside for a long period of time, it’s worth considering packing items like a chair, blankets and a way to make hot drinks. You will also want to ensure you have charging equipment for devices like your phone which you might use for stargazing apps, maps and photos.
