Get your home ready for cosy fires this winter with top quality wood from this family-run Yorkshire firm.

The Harrogate Log Store was set up by Richard Green in 2011 as a one-man business. Although it has now expanded to include five delivery vehicles, many more staff, a shop and showroom and delivers across the whole of Yorkshire, that same family values and personal customer service remain paramount.

“We get to know our customers really well,” said Richard, who expanded the business to become a supplier of kiln-dried hardwood in 2013, to add to the range of seasoned mixed hardwood and softwood logs, kindling and fireside accessories.

Quality firewood assured

The business has the Woodsure Ready to Burn stamp of approval, which sets down strict rules for suppliers on wood quality.

Richard recommends kiln-dried firewood for the most efficient burning and heat production.

“I had my doubts when I first heard about it, but from the first time I tried it I’ve never burned anything else,” he said.

So, what are the advantages of kiln-dried wood?

It’s hardwood which has had a specified amount of moisture taken out of it – it removes more than regular air drying. And, when used properly in your stove, gives a controlled slow burn, produces more heat within the firebox and is cleaner – giving you less soot to clean off the glass and less going up the chimney. On a practical level you’ll find yourself burning fewer logs, cleaning out the ash pit less frequently and you’ll enjoy more heat from your stove.

The more moisture there is in the wood, the more smoke is produced and the more heat is wasted up the flue.

But, burning wood is a personal choice, and Harrogate Logs also stock a range of softwoods and seasoned hardwoods, as well as briquettes and smokeless fuel.

Bulk buy or buy as you need it?

Whatever way you choose to buy your wood, Harrogate Log Store can meet your needs. If you have space to stock up for winter, then a bulk buy delivery of a tonne of wood is a good option – it can last some people a whole season if they are just using the stove for evenings and weekends.

Most households using kiln-dried logs will burn a couple to get the fire started and, once the air vents are down keeping a low flickering flame, another three or four logs should easily last the evening.

The specialised delivery trucks, and pallet movers mean Harrogate Log Store’s delivery drivers can get it as close to your home or log store as possible. The wood is bundled up in net with a waterproof top – so it’ll stay dry even if it’s delivered in the rain or snow.

But if you just like to order a bag when you need it, that’s fine too – some customers like to call in and pick up their own when they’re passing.

How long does delivery take?

There is a large store of wood all year round, so most orders can be fulfilled and delivered within seven days. December is usually the busiest month, and it’s one Christmas job you could tick off your list now

You can book a delivery slot for December now – no need to pay up front, just get that date booked and you know you’ll have wood for Christmas.

Richard Green

All wood is carefully sourced to ensure it comes from a sustainable source, balancing supply and sustainability with costs. And whilst other fuels have increased dramatically in price this year Richard says wood prices have remained relatively stable for the past three years.

So, turning the heating off and banking up the stove could help you cut down on costs whilst keeping you cosy!
