It was an area of Leeds city centre - from Fish Street leading into Kirkgate - which was home to butchers' shops and soon after this photo was taken would be demolished to be replaced by the Wholesale Meat Market and Abattoir built by Leeds Corporation. This was Leeds in 1899 and the image is one of 12 which provide an fascinating insight into life around the city during the year. It was a 12 months which saw the relaying of tram tracks in the city centre and beyond. This wonderful collection of photos is published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
