Enchanting photos take you back to Leeds in the 1880s

These enchanting photos take you back to the 1880s when Leeds was a town not a city.

It was a decade which started with the first telephones established in the town, the opening of the first fish and chip shop and Michael Marks open a stall in Leeds market. Leeds divided into five Parliamentary constituencies by the mid-1880s and Leeds Art Gallery was opened in 1888. Enjoy these photos, published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, run by Leeds Library & Information Service, which showcase life across Leeds during an era which also saw Louis Le Prince takes some of the world’s first moving pictures from Leeds Bridge.
