It was the year an appeal went out to the thousands of couples who met before war at a dance school in Leeds. The dancing has continued at the Dennis Altman School of Dancing, formerly the Mark Altman School, through two world wars and 85 years. Dennis Altman, the ex-Leeds councillor, who headed the school in Great George Street, was hoping couples who met there would return for the birthday celebrations. "In pre war days dance halls were the only way boy could meet girl" he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "We had so many romances leading to engagements that we used to hold wedding receptions here. I hope a few of the couples who met in this way will get in touch. We have had to limit the numbers to 250 for comfort's sake. I had a phone call from an 86 year old man who told me he came to a wedding reception here when he was six." The story was featured in your Yorkshire Evening Post in 1987 and is one of 24 photos charting a year to remember. It was also a 12 months Leeds United fans pay their respects to one of their own while thousands turned out to watch a Material Girl perform at Roundhay Park.
