22 of the best photos take you back to Leeds in 1979

The refurbished inside of Leeds Town Hall was sporting rather large error along with its new decorations.

Red-faced council officials admitted they had miscopied a Latin motto and left it meaningless. The well-known motto, Deo, Regi, Patriae (God, King and Country) appeared on buildings throughout Britain. Yet the large lettered inscription on the redecorated wall read: Deo, Regi, Partrier. This was Leeds in 1979, a year which featured the opening of the new Leeds Register Office in Belgrave House on Belgrave Street for registration of births, deaths and marriages. It was also a 12 months which featured hundreds of people turning up at the Leeds Immunisation Centre on Park Square for jabs after a cholera outbreak in Spain. City centre landmarks are featured as well as memories from the suburbs with Boston Spa, Aberford, Kirkstall, Seacroft and Armley all in focus. The photos are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
