Dr Walter Hook, former Vicar of Leeds and champion of workers’ rights, has got to grips with another social cause. This time it was a silent protest at no-parking areas - not of great concern to him in the centre of City Square you might say. But somebody put him up to it, and the ‘Poor People’s Parson’ could never resist a good cause. The hand raised in benediction has become a warning gesture to traffic wardens. And they would be foolish to incur the wrath of the belligerent, stubborn Dr Hook - arguably the city’s greatest vicar. This was Leeds in 1978 and the photo is one of 17 charting the year. Other city centre landmarks are featured as well as memories from around the suburbs with Oulton, Chapel Allerton, Horsforth, Gipton, Collingham and Hunslet all in focus.
