Local landmarks such as the police station, pubs and corner shops and take centre stage in this wonderful round up. Meanwood Beck and the Miles Hill estate are also both in focus as well as well travelled streets in the heart of the community such as Meanwood Road and Stonegate Road. The images are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks. Houses on Stonegate Road in September 1937. On the right is a stone property, number 79 Stonegate Road, with a cigarette machine facing the footpath. Number 79 was Stonegate Dairy Farm, also known as the White Farm. The farm made regular milk deliveries in the locality via horse & cart. The extension on the front, right, housed the farm shop which eventually began to sell more general commodities like bread, biscuits and cigarettes. On the gable end of the building is a huge advertising hoarding for Kodak Film. | Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net Photo: Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net

A licensed grocer's shop, the business of Reginald Joseph, also selling sweets and tobacco. To the rear of the shop was number 29 Green Road, the poultry farm of Alvra I. & G. W. Hopwood. The South View Poultry Farm operated on land leased from the owner, Samuel Smith (the brewer) of Tadcaster. It relocated to these premises from land elsewhere on Green Road in 1928 where it remained in business here until 1938. Harry Perfect was an employee with the firm.
