Network Rail have once again stressed the importance of pedestrian safety near level crossings, as footage has emerged of one lucky pedestrian narrowly missed being hit by a speeding train.

The footage, taken from Lincoln High Street, shows a young male hopping over the safety barriers near Lincoln Central train station - looking “worse for wear.”

Just four seconds later a heavy freight train blasts through at around 100mph blaring its horn while the man seems oblivious to the danger.

The CCTV footage has been released as a cautionary reminder to student freshers in the university city about the dangers of hopping over level crossing barriers while the warning signals are in operation.

With the university year now in full swing, Network Rail issued the footage as a ‘lesson in rail safety’ to the latest group of students starting at University of Lincoln.

“This behaviour is incredibly dangerous and deeply concerning” Elisha Allen, community safety manager for Network Rail, said.

"The individual involved recklessly risked their life to stumble just a few metres further forward. The level crossing on Lincoln High Street is a busy and active route across the railway, and it can present a real danger if not used correctly.”

British Transport Police (BTP), Network Rail and East Midlands Railway (EMR) have now joined together to issue guidance to students on staying safe on a night out.

Chief Inspector of the British Transport Police, Ricky Sweeney, said “The railway is no place to take a shortcut. Trains travel at speeds of up to 125mph, sitting wider than the tracks they run on and often quieter than expected.”

“Getting somewhere a little quicker is not worth the risk, and we have seen first-hand that this can lead to tragic consequences or life-changing injuries – both outcomes are avoidable.”

He finished by saying “There is simply no excuse for not following the safety procedures at level crossings.
