The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms for all of the UK on Tuesday (11 August), saying “Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms”, but that “there is significant uncertainty in location and timing.”

“Whilst the most intense thunderstorms, in some instances associated with large hail, will most probably be those triggered by the high temperatures of the day over England and Wales, other areas of storms producing heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and strong gusty winds could reach further north at times over Scotland and Northern Ireland,” the Met Office adds.

What to expect from the weather warning:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents.
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

Similarly, Wednesday (12 August) will see a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in place for the whole of the UK.

The Met Office explains that these thunderstorms could occur at any time of the day, explaining “Where the storms occur, rainfall totals of 30-40 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving 60-80 mm in 3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated.”

A yellow weather warning is also in place on Thursday (13 August), but only for England and Wales, not Scotland or Northern Ireland.

This warning of thunderstorms is in place from 12am until 23.59pm.

There are then no warnings in place for the rest of the week.

What will next week’s weather be like?

Over the weekend and into the following week, there will be more settled and drier weather conditions, although some thundery showers may still affect the southeast at first.

There’s also a chance of thicker cloud bringing outbreaks of rain to the northwest at times.

Fog patches are possible overnight for many, although these will quickly clear through the mornings.

“Temperatures are likely to be warm for most parts of the UK well into the middle of August,” adds the Met Office.
