McDonald’s Happy Meals traditionally always include a toy, but in preparation for World Book Day 2020, the fast food chain will be adding book tokens to every Happy Meal.
For £2.99 the Happy Meal will include a toy, drink, side, main, and a book voucher - allowing children to pick up a book for free.
What is World Book Day?
World Book Day is an annual celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading.
The UNESCO initiative is marked in over 100 countries around the globe and aims to celebrate books and reading, particularly among children.
National Book Tokens are usually sent out in the UK and Ireland to allow children to choose their own book to read and unlock their imaginations.
What can I do with my free book voucher?
Families and children can either swap the book token for one of the 12 World Book Day books, or they can use it to get £1 off another book at locations across the UK, including many supermarkets.
This year's books are designed to be enjoyed by children of all ages, with authors including Anthony Horowitz, Matt Haig and Beth Reekles.
The World Book Day website says, “Thanks to National Book Tokens and lots of lovely book publishers and booksellers, World Book Day, in partnership with schools all over the country, will be distributing more than 15 million £1 World Book Day book tokens to children and young people (that’s almost one for every child/young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland).”

When will the vouchers be available?
The tokens will be included in Happy Meal boxes from Wednesday 5 February to Tuesday 17 March 2020.
The vouchers are available for use between 27 February and 29 March 2020.
How do I redeem the voucher?
When you get your book token, all you need to do is to take it to your local participating bookseller and swap it for one of the exclusive, new and completely free World Book Day books.
To find your participating bookseller, visit: booksellers.org.uk/wbd
You can also use your book token to get £1 off any full price book or audiobook instead. However, the book or audiobook must cost at least £2.99.
McDonald’s chief marketing officer, Gareth Helm, said, “We hope the distribution of World Book Day tokens on our Happy Meal boxes will encourage even more families to Share a Story and celebrate the magic of reading together.”
